Issues

Like it or not, politics impacts our lives every day. As a democracy we rely on our elected officials to represent our interests. They decide how and where to spend our tax dollars. They decide who is and isn't a threat to society. These are some issues that are important to us.

Good Day To Die
Too Much Money

About half of the federal budget is spent on defense.. Almost 400 billion dollars this year. This leaves all other important services including education, health services, and state programs, underfunded.

This chart shows the billions of dollars that have been spent on war in addition to the money spent in the pie chart above. Notice how much is used on reconstruction as opposed to combat.

The US outspends the rest of the world on defense. What are we so afraid of that we need this much defense? Is this money really being used to protect us, or is it funding imperialism?

Did the 13th Amendment ban slavery, or did it create a loophole allowing it?

US CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT XIII

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for a crime, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

One in every 110 men are in prison. We have almost 2.2 million people in prison in the US. This is the highest incarceration rate in the world, higher that China or Russia.

This chart illustrates the obvious institutional racism in our justice system. Looking at these figures it's not surprising that 1 out of 3 black males will serve time in prison during his lifetime.

Increased privitization of prisons is allowing corporations to reap huge profits from what amounts to slave labor. Prisoners are working full time for slave wages, and at the same time are being charged for their stay in prison (~20,000/year) so they end up being thousands of dollars in debt when they are released.
